Single African Air Transport Market among AU major achievements

Nouakchott, ANGOLA, June 27 - The creation Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) and the Free Trade Area, as well as the Protocol on Free Movement of Persons, were highlighted Monday in Nouakchott, Mauritania, as some of the main achievements of the African Union (UA) in the last six months.,

These are "important initiatives" in the efforts to expand regional integration and promote trade and economic growth on the continent, according to the minister of the Permanent Representatives' Committee (PRC) of the Pan African organization, the Rwandan diplomat Hope Tumukunde Gasura.

She emphasized that the other achievements are the progress made in the campaign for the implementation of ongoing institutional reforms and for self-financing by the AU in order to provide better services to its citizens.

Ambassador Gasura was speaking at the opening of the 36th ordinary session of the PRC, preparatory to the 31st summit of Heads of State and Government scheduled for July 1-2.

The PRC meeting is the first of a series of statutory sessions of the AU summit taking place in the Mauritanian capital until July 2, the day of closure of the activities by the Heads of State and Government.

The importance of international security, democracy, human rights, gender equality and the rule of law for the development of international trade and economic cooperation are also among the basis for the creation of the African Free Trade Area (ZCLCA).

To this end, the signatory States are also proposing to progressively liberalize trade in services, to cooperate in the fields of investment, customs and trade facilitation, by establishing a dispute settlement mechanism.

Finally, the Protocol on the Free Movement of Persons, the Right of Residence and Right of Establishment provides essentially for the reciprocal protection of nationals by States in their territories with the guarantee of the right to enter, stay and move freely.

It also establishes the obligation for States to cooperate in the process of identification and issuance of travel documents, allowing nationals of another State to enter freely, without the visa requirement, until the adoption of the single African passport as a travel document, among other measures.
